Where's My Thing
The Rush instrumental you don't know.
Jackie R. asked in this post for instrumental recommendations. This got me to thinking how much fun it would be to have an instrumental week. So here we begin!
When you think of Rush instrumentals, you think of La Villa Strangiato or YYZ. Both great songs. But I want to talk about one of my personal favourites, off the Roll The Bones album (which Rush seems to hate because it’s not on their YouTube channel - I seem to have a thing for the albums the bands hate).
This song was nominated for a Grammy. Best Rock Instrumental in 1992. Granted, there weren’t many rock instrumentals that year, but still! It’s subtitled "Part IV, Gangster of Boats trilogy." Very funny, guys. It’s a really fun (and short) musical adventure.
I’ll let the late, great Neil Peart have the last word (from a promo CD) :
I was really proud of our record company, that they released Dreamline as the first track and then they put out Where's My Thing? for alternative stations or basically anyone who had the nerve to play it. And it made a great alternative for college radio in the States or alternative radio anywhere that exists, which isn't very far but at the same time it was just a very creative thing for a record company to do, I thought. Not just to be worried, "Ok, here's our marketing strategy," they would say, "Let's do this because it would be fun and unusual, and the song is there." So I thought that was really a good thing to do. A friend of ours says that it's just another version of Telstar like all instrumentals are, which is funny. And very true!
Enjoy your song of the day!

*Roll the Bones* is an underappreciated album for sure; and I adore "Where's My Thing?". Thanks for featuring it today!
Love this deep cut! Some of my favorite songs on their albums are their instrumentals. Roll The Bones was definitely underappreciated. I have to say, for me,I didn’t love the production on it. But the songs were top notch.
