Today I saw Rumours of Fleetwood Mac - Live in Concert, an official tribute band. A recording of Mick Fleetwood opens the proceedings, giving his formal blessing to this endeavour.1 Having never seen the band live, this was an approximation of the band during the Rumours tour.
The thing that really struck me was how many of the songs had lead vocals by Christine McVie.2 Having heard Stevie Nicks feted forever, I just assumed all the female lead vocals were hers. I also didn’t realize until I started research for this how many of their hits she wrote, including this one she penned with her then husband Portuguese songwriter/keyboardist Eddy Quintela3.
It appears on 1987’s hit album Tango in the Night, which became the band’s second biggest album after Rumours.4 McVie said about the song: "The idea of the lyric is: If I had the chance, I'd do it differently next time. But since I can't, just carry on lying to me and I'll believe, even though I know you're lying." American Songwriter goes into a deep dive on the song here.
I remember when this video came out how shocked I was by how hot Lindsay Buckingham is in it.5 It’s directed by Dominic Sena, who was working with Janet Jackson, Richard Marx, Peter Cetera, and Sting that same year before going on to direct the films Kalifornia, Whiteout, and Swordfish among others. They basically walk around a farm but it’s oddly compelling, which has a lot to do with the closeups the band gets, especial Buckingham. VH1 had launched a couple of years earlier and it’s obviously geared to that channel.
Enjoy your song of the day!
The band is officially retired and won’t tour again.
I also really like her look. Girl knew the power of jackets.
She said later that his contribution was minimal.
It seems everyone outside of Christine McVie and Lindsay Buckingham was wrestling with substance abuse of some kind, so it seems like a miracle it sounds as good as it does.
In my mind it’s his short-lived hotness era. 80s men’s style was the best.
Great song! I've never been a big Fleetwood Mac fan (unpopular opinion, I know); this is one of a few of their songs I enjoy.
Always loved this song! Made my Top Ten of 1987!
