We must be on the same frequency today: this song just started playing in my mind!

Very cool!

This post was almost completed last weekend but then I decided to get Rik's memoir from the library to see what he had to say. I had to wait for it to come in, which it did yesterday. Glad I did, it's a much better post for it. So I've had this song in the ether for a while!

One of my all-time faves. Is it really their best known song though? Not in the states. I think it's Magic Power over here.

According to my research their songs “All the Way” and “World of Fantasy” are the highest charting songs by Triumph in the U.S. I’m way off.

That's when they were able to get the most airplay but who remembers these songs now? I'll give you Magic Power but to me it's this one.

I personally prefer “Lay it on the Line” but both are classics.

Wow, I wouldn't have guessed either of those.

As is my usual state, I can't pick a favorite Triumph song ... there are too many great ones.

I saw Triumph on, I believe, their Allied Forces tour. Maybe it was their Never Surrender? I can't remember as I was 12 or 13, but it was fan-bloody-tastic. At the time, I thought Rik Emmett was the greatest. He was slick, fast, and yet more humble than his peers Eddie VH and Randy Rhodes. He was also never as "metal" as any of them. There was always a melody, even when he was jamming. But then, in the middle of it all, something like the subtle, touching beauty of "Midsummers Daydream" is inserted in the midsection of an album, and he reminds you of his unique versatility as a player.

Back to seeing them live—I remember the lasers. They were all over the place, and they had their big lit-up "Triumph" lights behind the drum kit. To this 12/13 year old, they killed it that night. For what it's worth, despite a purge where I moved on from a lot of LPs from my youth, I kept all of my Triumph albums (the last one of theirs I bought was Thunder Seven, which I never liked. However, "Midsummers" is so damn good I kept it simply for that stunning 1'40).
