I held off watching the documentary Triumph: Rock & Roll Machine because I knew I’d want to write about them afterwards. It hurt my heart to hear that The Sport of Kings album was a rough time for the band because I adore it. I’ve already talked about my favourite track, Play With the Fire. So today I’m going to talk about the final track on the album.
This is a quintessential collaboration track. All three members are listed as writers. Rik Emmett and Gil Moore split lead vocals. It has the Triumph touch of speaking about emotions that everyone can relate to - in this case, searching for the words to save a relationship.
The lyrics are gorgeous. Here’s a sample:
You say that love is holding you down
I watch you walkin' away
I look for something that could turn this around
There's nothin' I can say
In the middle of the night...I´m calling
Can you hear me whisper your name
In the dying of the light...I´m falling
But it feels like the morning may never be coming again
The internet has failed me in finding a live version of the song. I’m not even sure it even exists as it doesn’t appear on the video of this tour. So instead I’m going to share the video from them being inducted into the Canadian Walk of Fame in 2019. Their speech isn’t up but here’s a tribute by…Gowan! (I swear I’m not making this up. The guy is haunting me.)
Enjoy your song of the day.
Gowan and pretend you don’t secretly get a thrill connecting him to every post!😜
Don’t know much of Triumph’s music outside of the bigger hits, but this is lovely
