Bob Seager has described writing this song as being the closest he’s ever been to having a song come to him in a dream. In this case, the chorus came to him as he was driving along the Hollywood Hills. Driving home, he finds a Time magazine with Cheryl Tiegs on the cover and imagines what it would be like for a young man from the Midwest to be caught up in this whole lifestyle. He then thought about how his longtime backup singers Laura Creamer and Shaun Murphy would go to town on the song. And he wrote himself a hit.
I love story songs with a driving beat and this song fills that bill to perfection. Besides the Silver Bullet Band, legendary rock/blues pianist Bill Payne plays on the track - you can hear his work in the bridge. The song was the second single off of the Stranger in Town album1 and while it just missed cracking the top 10, it has endured.
(I haven’t found a good alternative to Spotify and I found out that YouTube pays even less, so it’s back to posting Spotify links. Read this article to find out about the problems with Spotify and act accordingly.)
I never got to see the band live but here is Bob Seager performing the song in Toronto in 2019. The concert was 3 1/2 hours long!
Enjoy your song of the day!
This has to be a future café album. There’s a lot of good, iconic stuff on it.
