When he performed it in Paris the crowd was silent and his manager told him afterwards that they thought he was singing in Polish. So it does come from somewhere.
WTF? I don't believe that at all. I lived in Paris for 7 years and speak fluent French. His accent is excellent, he clearly hired a speaking coach to get it right.
Another unknown Billy Joel track, an interesting and intriguing one!
My wife, originally from Quebec, loves Helene by Roch Voisine. So do I. But we both love it in a different language! Because she loved the French version so much, it kills her whenever I listen to the English version.
Another couple tracks that I prefer in English: Nena’s 99 Luftballoons and Rupert Holmes’ Him. For years I only ever knew the English version of Him until my wife introduced me to the French version which was only ever released in Canada: https://youtu.be/eQNT66xGoO4?si=Cu_z7c8bk1YAZZ_r
I agree with your wife about Helene. It's always jarring to me in English. Same with 99 Luftballoons. I only know Him in English. The French release must have been Quebec only.
Wow! His accept is excellent! Overly self critical.

My French isn't good enough to tell one way or another so I took him at his word. Happy to hear that when I am singing it that it is right!
I understood every word he said as I'm sure the French do. Bisous MK!😘😘

I’ve only ever heard Helene in English so that became “the” version for me although I don’t dislike it in French.
