I discovered this song like a lot of people, as the opening to the final show of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. The story goes that Ferguson discovered the song on twitter a few months before he ended his show (Ferguson and the band are all from Cumbernauld, Scotland) and wanted to bring them on but they couldn’t get a visa to make it happen1. So instead Ferguson, a former punk drummer, performed the song himself, featuring the two drummer occasional in-house band2 Bone Patrol , the Sex Pistols' Steve Jones on guitar, a gospel choir, and a lot of celebrity guests3.
Dead Man Fall posted a list of all the celebs drumming to their song, pretty much in disbelief.
If you want to hear the original, I have it for you as well.
Enjoy your song of the day!
The band wasn’t considered established enough to qualify.
Ferguson’s show famously didn’t have a house band but over time, this band was put together and would show up from time to time. It was led by Scottish musician Michael Andrew.
I spent a lot of time to find out who the drummers and the choir were but the internet isn’t giving up its secrets.
As a drummer I’m shocked that I had never heard this song before. And as a fan of the Craig Ferguson Late Late Show (or whatever it was called), I’d never seen the finale before either! So you provided a double dose of inspiration and humility! Thanks for the background and both videos. And for trying to get the names of the musicians and the choir. Damn internet! What a dumb dumb!
Thank you for reminding me of this song. I used to have that episode bookmarked just so I could listen to it whenever I wanted.
