NME magazine said that this was the best song Ultravox never wrote. The Spoons, a band out of Burlington Ontario, was heavily influenced by Ultravox and were helped in creating this sound by recording at George Martin’s AIR studio in London with English producer John Punter, who had worked with Roxy Music and Japan.
It’s taking 80s New Wave and mixing it with electronic pop to create something very danceable. Combine it with the lyrical message of feeling trapped in other people’s expectations and it’s a very distinct song.
Here’s Gord Deppe talking about the recording process.
One of the things I discovered doing research is that they release a compilation album in 2021 called Echoes, where other artists take on their songs. To my surprise, the artist covering this song is no other than Gowan1. Check out his stripped back version, which starts with just piano and vocal, then builds with orchestral instruments before paring it back again.
Enjoy your song of the day!
I swear I didn’t plan it. Gowan is obviously haunting me to get on with his show already.
