(Originally posted on Facebook 19 August 2019. I wanted something to offset the horrific events from the past weekend. This was what came to mind. At the time, nuclear war was the war everyone was concerned about but with the various wars we’ve seen in the last 5 years, the call to lead with our hearts still resonates.)
Listened to the Best of Culture Club while working this weekend and to my surprise this is the song that stuck in my head. Wasn't a fan at the time but now really appreciate both how it's structured musically (check out the wail that I thought was Helen Terry but apparently is Clare Torry.) Like Hall & Oates' Method of Modern Love, the simplistic chorus hides very thoughtful verses and bridge.
And I have to share the video. It's so very 80s. Boy George & Culture Club are all looking fantastic. The clothes! (Jon Moss is especially studly - we all know who the true sex symbol of the group was.) The use of children highlights the underlying message of the song and makes the very simplistic chorus fit. After all, it's what children would sing. Sadly, it's message is still all too relevant.
Wow. that video is amazing. i don’t think i have ever seen it before. that was when videos had budgets and could get 100 children in skeleton suits. it has always been a favorite anti-war song of mine. Boy George solo albums are also fantastic. very different, as his voice is quite deep now. 2018s Life is especially good.
