This post is from over a year ago and was the 12th post I wrote here. I tackled this song at karaoke last night and feel really good about it. It is a monster but so satisfying when you get it right. It feels like a good time to revisit it.
The official channel hasn’t made the video available in Canada but since talking about the videos is kinda my thing, I’ve updated this post with the vid that I found from a kind soul on YouTube. Enjoy!
I’m a big fan of Adam Lambert, especially his first album For Your Entertainment. This is the final track on the album and was chosen to appear on the soundtrack for the movie 2012. It has a driving vocal and a message of hope. From Songfacts:
This declaration of faith in the healing power of love was composed by Alain Johannes and his late partner Natasha Shneider, who succumbed to cancer on July 2, 2008. The duo performed together in the '90s rock outfit Eleven and later contributed to several Queens of the Stone Age albums. Johannes also plays as a live rhythm guitarist in Them Crooked Vultures.
That would explain the power in the song. Lambert talked about the process of recording it:
The song was produced by big-rock guru Rob Cavallo, the man behind hit albums for Green Day, My Chemical Romance and Paramore among many others. Lambert explained to MTV News that working with Cavallo was fairly intense. "[He] pushed me to the limit," Lambert said. "I sang for my life. It was quite a day of recording, but it turned out great."
The official video places Lambert in the world of 2012. We see clips of the film as well as Lambert moving through the hellscape of the destruction that the film represents. It was directed by Wayne Isham, who had been one of the pioneers of music videos in the 80s and had directed for almost everyone. What’s striking to me is how Isham melds the green screen of the film showing people running to having Lambert react to being pushed by them.
Enjoy your song of the day!
great song & great album indeed !
