Open All Night
I was reminded about my favourite album from Daryl Hall and John Oates recently and I just love sharing the deep cuts from it, which I think are even better than the hits. (And the hits from H2O are huge - Maneater and One on One.)
This track has a beautiful, driving arrangement. The lyrics tell of a woman stepping out while the singer is out of town and he’s calling her on it. Daryl Hall wrote a lot of these types of lyrics. What really makes the song is the high line from the synths in the beginning, the bassline from T-Bone Wolk really working the low notes and the repeating refrain “No, I don’t want to tell you” in the outro.
This song was for a while the ender of the set in concert, as the musicians would leave one by one during the outro after getting a solo moment, leaving Mickey Curry the last one standing playing the drums. This live recording captures that beautiful exit.
Enjoy your song of the day!
