Amazing non trivial trivia about one of my fave songs! I referenced this song in my last Valentine's Day newsletters about yoga and Chakras, because Chaka Kahn, and this song, always come to mind every time I hear the word Chakras. Namaste๐๐ป๐
It really was. So many genres all mainstream at the same time, with a good mix of experienced artists from the 60s and 70s getting one more kick at the can while a whole new generation entered. The pressures on the artists to put out a new record every year wasn't great for the artist's mental health but it did mean there was a ton of music to choose from that was all played on the radio.
yeah, the expectations were just so unreal back, but i think they are now too because labels won't give any support to artists to find the next thing, now it has to be a surefire hit somehow, which often don't even result in that. moreso, the transition for an artist from the 60s or 70s to be relevant in the 80s meant going for that synthy, 80s sound which never really translated for many folks. or at least, it doesn't hold up now
Totally! Some can make it really hit but others had a harder time. I think about Earth Wind and Fireโs output in the 80s and itโs just not the same as their earlier

The second music video is very impressively 80s!
Wow this was so huge back in the day! Iโm pretty sure this is the first Chaka Khan song I ever heard, forgot how great it is.
Thank you for featuring this song, and apologies for not following up to your question on my post (https://musicoftheday.substack.com/p/8-oct-23-rufus-chaka-khan-tell-me-something-good). I haven't heard this song before; I surely wouldn't have forgotten its funky groove. Digging the 80s vibes!
All good. Now I can update the post. Thanks!
the 80s - wow, what a time to be alive

True enough but the rock bands/guitar artists were somehow able to navigate it. I also really like the synth sound so it wasn't a big deal for me.
