Finish Line
Elton John & Stevie Wonder? Yes please!
This is from The Lockdown Sessions album that Elton John recorded well, during the lockdown. It features Kanye West’s Sunday Service choir and Elton and Stevie alternating verses. Musically it’s very basic. Stevie plays a harmonica solo in the middle and it feels like a warm hug. Honestly, when Stevie starts harmonizing with Elton, it’s tear-inducing. Stevie still sounds amazing.
The lyrics talk about going to the bottom and having someone there to help lift you up. There’s such joy coming through their voices you can’t help but be carried along on the journey. It’s a rousing singalong.
The clip mixes vintage home movie footage of pivotal moments in people's lives with scenes from the pandemic. You’ll see couples with their babies, weddings and family gatherings. You'll also see health care workers and people wearing masks going about their daily lives. During the harmonica solo, there’s photos of Elton and Stevie performing together in the 70s, highlighting their friendship. The outro has concert footage of both, intermixed with examples of triumphs.
Just make sure you have tissues nearby when you watch.
Enjoy your song of the day!
